I like to make places. For me its about being where I am, having somekind of relationship with a place and telling it's story. What I do is get myself into a place, take materials, make drawings, start making things, channeling things that have to do with that place. I love history, the history that is between the cracks.

EVENT PRESS RELEASE

A chance to enter the artist’s studio

Bedford-Stuyvesant’s 35 Claver Place opening its doors to public

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The residents of the artist building at 35 Claver Place are opening their studios from May 17-18, to display their work in conjunction with the SONYA Open Studio Stroll 2008.

Since 1985, emerging and established artists have lived and worked at 35 Claver Place in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. This open studio event offers a unique opportunity to discover new work as well as experience what has become a rare environment in modern Gotham: an all-artist residence comprised of legal live-work lofts. Despite the changing landscape of New York’s arts community, the enclave, housed in the old Inverso Warehouse Building, continues to provide a setting where professional artistic endeavors can realistically thrive.

Four new artists have joined 35 Claver Place since the previous Sonya Stroll – Kennis Baptiste, Sam Bland, Ju-Yeon Kim and Cedar Mannan – all of whom will be welcoming visitors to their studios at the event.

Other residents of 35 Claver Place who will be opening their studios on the May 17-18 weekend include John Bjerklie, Melissa Gorman, and Steven Samet.

The open studio at 35 Claver Place is open to the public. For more information, directions and examples of the artists’ work, visit 35claver.org on the World Wide Web or call Gina Inverso at 347-404-7758.

Dates: May 17–18 Noon to 6:00 pm each day, rain or shine
